On June 25th we said goodbye to Canto De Nelli and headed for Prague! We had mixed feelings about Prague, since none of us knew a thing to do there. We started off the trip by flying Easyjet, big mistake. They were complete idiots who lacked in the customer service department. They were so rude they made us check our backpacks(which could totally fit on the plane) for the low price of 30 Euro each way, that was fun.
When we finally arrived in Prague we made our way to our apartment/hotel. I was a bit hesitant considering we were dropped off at a big wooden door with only the number 10 on it. Going inside it still wasn’t very reassuring, we were in a creepy garden scene with strange people just sitting on steps. Finally we found the office, they gave us the keys, we went right on up!
Unfortunately we had a minor set back and couldn’t get the lock undone to our room….yes, we had to go back downstairs and get them to unlock our door. Somewhat embarrassing. Our room/ apartment was awesome! Very spacious and just what we wanted.

After we got settled we decided to take a look around and stumbled upon a music festival! I would say it was a mix between heavy metal/ Indie Rock music in Czech of course. As we were wandering around with our VIP passes( haha) drinking our Czech beer we met two guys from Maryland who said they were here with the WOLF program. Which meant they were here to work on an organic sheep farm hahah. They were probably the most interesting people we have met yet. After we enjoyed our first Prague food we decided to head to our apartment and get ready for the evening, by this point it was around 7 at night. Luckily our apartment was right across the street from the oldest microbrewery in Prague. We went in there and tried to get some food, to our surprise not all of Europe eats on Italy time and they had quit serving food. Instead we just grabbed some of their famous beer( which were dirt cheap), headed home and talked the night away. At this point we were missing our other two amigos who had left us in Florence, whomp whomp.
Day 2
Once we all woke up we decided to explore Prague along with everything it had to offer. We started off by heading to Old Town Square. It is famous for the old Astronomical clock. Every hour on the hour a member of the guard comes out and plays a tune on a trumpet. Crowds of people would gather around just to watch him come out and play, I felt like I was in Medieval times. Lucky for us a food festival was going on in the square. Katie, Megan, and I started off the morning with a grilled cheese. How I missed greasy food! It was so delicious we decided we had to try more of the food. Once we were completely stuffed we started to head toward Charles Bridge.
A couple of people in our group really wanted to get art work from the bridge, we were on a mission. Katie was determined to find a painting that had to do with the John Lennon Wall. The John Lennon wall is this remarkable wall from the 1960’s, it is a symbol of defiance during the time of strict government policy. With her lucky Irish roots she was able to find exactly the painting she wanted! After our luxurious 3 hour nap we decided to try a place to eat the was recommended by our good buddy Rick Steves. The place we decided to go to was a local pub type scene with a variety of food to choose from. You could get meat, meat, or more meat. Somehow we decided on Old Prague’s platter of meat. Madison and I decided to share it, the dish had a variety of different kinds of meat. It had a Turkey leg, pork chops, chicken, sauerkraut, dumplings, and not to mention the things that we had no idea what they were. Overall it was delish. Apparently Prague is famous for their Pig Knee, I being the super American I am refused to try it, but no telling if it was on our platter or not.
That night we were having trouble finding something to do, naturally I suggested we follow the big group of people our age. Yeah, that was a mistake. They definitely weren’t going anywhere of interest, haha my bad. Prague also has a lot of casinos. As we walked pass one Madison marched right in and was going to play roulette. Of course the rest of us watched from outside, we are chickens…. She came out very angered that we had not followed her in haha. Oh well! I was down to go in, but absolutely no one was in them, it weirded me out. Scratch that idea. Instead we just walked around and eventually headed home!
Prague Castle
Today we were determined to go and see the Prague Castle. Starring at it from a distance it literally looked like a castle from a Disney movie, we had to see what it looked like within the walls. To get to the castle we had to catch a tram. Trams are probably my least favorite thing about Prague, no matter how smart we thought we were, we always got on the wrong tram. No matter what.
Anyway when we finally found the right one it took us right up to the castle…it was massive. The first thing we did was go in the walls and visit the cathedral. It was beautiful on the inside, full of sculptures and stain glass everywhere you looked. Next we headed to the royal chambers it was were the royalty within the castle walls met. They were all sorts of vaults and trap doors. Then in one of the rooms was a throne and a crown, cool! It gave you a very good picture of what it must of looked like. The view from this section of the castle was amazing. It literally looked over the entire city of Prague (Perfect for solo shots). The last thing we saw inside the castle was “Golden Lane”, which was a replicated street that was set up in the prime time of the castle. They were jewelry shops, Armor repair, The Doctors house, the movie makers house, A famous fortune tellers house. All of which was set up as if they had just went out for a morning stroll.
When we got back to our place Madison asked the front desk man for suggestions on where to eat. He told us we should try out the Lemon Leaf, who knew it would be a Thai restaurant? It was good nonetheless. It was a very trendy place, I felt like I was in New York or something. When we got finished we decided to try and go get some Starbucks (every since its discovery on first day we had been there every day). Sadly it was closed and we settled for a place next door which had amazing crepes. Woohoo!
Prague Zoo
Today was the day we had all been waiting for. It was the day we would visit the Prague Zoo! The Prague Zoo was portrayed as a super nice zoo that was supposed to have amazing animals, we had to check it out. We thought it might be nice to take a boat there. That plan crashed and burned. It was an hour wait for the next boat that only took 75 minutes to get there. I don’t think so, I can’t think of anything more unappealing than being on a boat in the blistering heat for over an hour, we started scrounging around for alternate options. The shortest way to get there was bus 112. We immediately would have done that if we had the faintest idea where that was, we decided to hop on a tram that go the closest to where we wanted to go. As soon we got off the tram bus 112 magically appeared and we took it to the entrance of the zoo.
I was expecting at least a 500 Krown entrance (around $30) to our surprise it was like $9! I liked this place already. We started off the day by eating, naturally. After we got done we headed over to the Sea Lion, it was such a cute little nugget! Swimming circles all around his tank. From this point we saw all sorts of animals they ranged from penguins to hippopotamuses.
My favorite animals were the Apes, Cats, and Elephants. The Apes were seriously so human like it freaked me out. They sat the same way as us, even some similar facial expressions. They even were able to look in windows demanding that they be fed. Very cool. Next came the Cat exhibit. The exhibit had a wide variety of different cats, the first one we saw was a huge Tiger. It was just hanging out taking a nap, next to the giant animal was a raw piece of meat. I’m assuming it was a light afternoon snack. Continuing through the exhibit we saw bobcats, miniature jaguar and many more. Great exhibit with a great variety of cats. Lastly were the elephants, Katie was adamant about seeing them. To get to the elephant we had to ride a ski lift type contraption. Madison was terrified which was hilarious…..
When we got to the top we took a detour and went into . It was like walking into a rain forest, we were officially in a pressurized bubble. To get out of this bubble we had to go into the “twilight zone”. When you start to get close to this zone bats fly out at you and it’s the scariest freaking thing. Emily and I somehow made it past the bats and waited for the others. We knew they were close when we heard wolfgang scream and Madison crawl/squat by like a secret agent. We were dying of laughter by this point, so loud that a worker had to come yell at us hahah. When we finally got out we vowed never to go in that thing again. After checking our map we started heading for the elephants!
The elephants were absolutely amazing. There were 3 huge animals just standing right in front of me. The two girls were gossiping in the middle of their area, while the poor male elephant was isolated from the others. They would use their trunks for everything and they even used rocks to scratch their legs! One of the elephants looked as though she was dancing. She was hanging out bobbing her head to a melody like “In Da Club”, we just at and watched for like thirty minutes. They were definitely the coolest.
After that we were all exhausted and decided to go clean up for the night, I would definitely recommend the Prague zoo to anyone who visits. It was not crowded, had tons of animals, inexpensive, and extremely clean. Not a bad combination.
Leaving the zoo we had to find the tram that took us back to our apartment. As we are walking to find it, the tram suddenly goes past us. Immediately we all start running toward the tram so it won’t leave us. I shout yell something in Czech( to make it stop of course)...none of us know Czech. By then we are jogging to the tram and Madison yells “ Commit Commit and everyone literally starts sprinting! Luckily we made it and our efforts were not wasted.
That night we wanted to try to find one of the famous beer gardens we had heard so much about. We thought it would be as easy as taking a tram, haha yeah right. We took a tram then had to walk up a steep hill, then catch another tram, then walk to a creepy park, then proceed in the creepy park and head right. Sounds simple right? We were all just praying that it was worth it. Once we finally stumbled upon it, the beer gardens were pretty cool. It was an area in the middle of nowhere with a ton of picnic tables and beer venders. When I had heard of them I imagined beer that you pluck off trees haha, I guess I was close. The beer was less than $2 and it was good dark beer. Not a bad way to enjoy your night.
We sat there lost in conversation for about two hours when we decided to try to get home. Our best option was to try to get a cab. This involved us walking back through the creepy park and finding a stand ( I am without pepper-spray mind you). All of us are a little jumpy as we walk through the park, when we are about to hit the exit I see a figure running our way coming out of the trees. He runs toward Emily, Madison, and Wolfgang. Emily lets our the most piercing scream I have ever heard in my life, all the poor guy wanted was a lighter….
For the rest of the way through the park everyone was super jumpy for fear of creatures lurking in the trees. We finally found a taxi stand and waited about 10 minutes for the first taxi to arrive. Emily, Wolfgang, and Katie hop in the cab leaving me and Madison to wait for the next one. Luckily he showed up about a minute after. He was a rude pompous Czech man who obviously didn’t care for us. He charged me and Madison $40 for a 5 minute ride. Since the total was in Czech we had no idea it was a bad thing until we started walking in. We were enraged to say the least. The other girls cab cost maybe $6, you win some you lose some right? After that we were so angry we just went to sleep. NOTE TO SELF, NEVER TRUST CZECH CAB DRIVERS. On our last day in Prague we decided we should try to take a day trip to Germany. We headed out of our apartment and tried to find the train station. Of course we get on the wrong tram, when we finally get on the right one we miss the 10:30 train. We decided we would just go at 12:30, then it got delayed 15 minutes, then 20 minutes, I was beginning to doubt Germany. Emily, Madison, and I decided to just enjoy Prague on our last day, while Katie and Wolfgang went on. We had a wonderful day shopping and checking out stores for ornaments for Emily (she collects them).
I was in need of a nap. During our peaceful nap the power went off and a strange alarm starting going off. Immediately I woke up out of my daze to make sure the apartment wasn’t on fire, come to find out it was the apartment across the street that had its alarm going off. I somehow managed to drift back off into sleep even with the screeching noise going off in the background. When we all finally woke up we went to meet Katie and Wolfgang at the train station. They told us all about their trip, which sounded amazing. I was instantly jealous when Kathleen told me about the chocolate factory!
After hearing about the trip we all decided that we needed to get dinner before everything closed. We picked a place right across the street from us, which turned out to be the best place we ate the entire trip. I got the sirloin that was dipped in a sour cream sauce, which was surprisingly sweet. Emily got beef goulash and the others got schnitzel. Everyone was extremely satisfied with their food! The best part was the Kozel beer we had with the meal. It was a dark beer that had a wonderful taste. Did I mention that the staff was dressed up as cute little toy solider men? It added a lot to the restaurant…. We took our last stroll around Prague and said goodbye to the wonderful city that had showed us a great time!
